Working, living, and relaxing on the water

Bremerhaven is in many ways characterised by its location on the water. Vacant areas on the waterfront, which in the past were used solely for industry and commerce, offer new opportunities for the future development of a sustainable urban environment with affordable housing. As promoters of business development, we not only focus on the economic strength of the location, but also on enhancing the quality of urban living and quality of life in the city.

The Werftquartier – urban quality of life on the water

The largest urban development project on the German North Sea coast, the “Werftquartier” in the south of Bremerhaven, is currently being built on a site covering 150 hectares. Until 2009, the traditional Schichau-Seebeck shipyard built large seagoing vessels here.
The proximity to Bremerhaven’s city centre and the neighbouring borough of Geestemünde as well as innovative building concepts, a vibrant urban mix and a focus on sustainability will all help to create a highly attractive new part of the city over the next few years.

New school buildings as part of an IPA project

Building with greater cost and schedule reliability – what could be better? In Bremerhaven, the municipal housing association STAWÖG and the BIS Bremerhaven Economic Development Company are breaking new ground in the construction of three new schools in the city. The highly acclaimed Bremerhaven process is the first public sector IPA project in building construction in Germany.

Innenstadt neu denken

Bremerhaven schaut nach vorn und gestaltet den Wandel der Innenstadt.

Einkaufserlebnis, Aufenthaltsqualität, Treffpunkt für die Bürgerinnen und Bürger – all das soll eine moderne, attraktive Bremerhavener Innenstadt bieten. Deshalb hat die Stadt Bremerhaven umfangreiche Maßnahmen zur Wandlung und Stärkung der Innenstadt auf den Weg gebracht.

Rudloffstrasse development area

With its Wilhelminian-style ambience and the on-trend “Alter Bürger” district, with the Havenwelten quarter directly to the south and a partly undeveloped building and utilisation structure with some brownfield sites, the area around Rudloffstrasse is typical for the structural change that the Seaside City is undergoing from an urban development perspective. The area also offers the opportunity for restructuring into a lively quarter right next to the city centre. Planning is progressing well in close consultation with local residents.

The Kistner site

Another prime example of Bremerhaven’s pioneering urban development is the site of the former H. F. Kistner sand-lime brick factory, founded in 1903. Its location at the spot where the Geeste river takes a sudden bend is bordered by the popular Geeste hiking trail and a nature-friendly riverbank park, a river promenade and public squares as well as the “Geeste balcony”. The city centre and the Havenwelten are just 2 km away.
