Today, Bremerhaven with its long fishing tradition is a well-known hotspot for modern fish processing companies. More than 4,000 people are employed in the fishing port, the center of the city‘s food industry. Over 200,000 tons of fish are processed here every year making Bremerhaven the largest fish processing location in Germany with a market share of more than 50%. Classic products such as fish fillets and smoked fish are produced here as well as innovative products such as fish burgers and fish sausages. In addition to the production facilities, Bremerhaven operates as a hub for the entire fish industry including wholesale, packaging, storage and refrigerated transportation. With a cold storage capacity of 650,000 cubic meters, the fishing port is known as "Europe's deep freeze".

With their proven research and development expertise, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with its food industry course, ttz Bremerhaven with its associated sensory laboratory, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the Thünen Institute of Sea Fisheries and Fisheries Ecology and the Center for Aquaculture Research at the AWI as well as various companies in the seaside city form an active network for the transfer of knowledge and cooperation between business and science.
