Expansion of transport links between the ports and the A27 freeway
Bremerhaven is one of the most important seaports in Europe and a major port location for Germany's global foreign trade. In addition to handling containers and vehicles of all kinds, the Bremen ports are also an important transshipment point for foodstuffs and heavy goods.
The federal government, the state of Bremen and the city of Bremerhaven see not only the maintenance and expansion of the port infrastructure as a major task, but also the securing of a high-performance hinterland connection. In Bremerhaven, the port tunnel - one of the central transport infrastructure projects - will in future provide an efficient link between the overseas port and the commercial areas near the port and the A27 freeway.
At the same time, it will provide a great deal of relief for local residents, who have been exposed to the enormous volume of traffic here on a daily basis up to now. The tunnel will greatly reduce noise and exhaust emissions.
