With construction of the German Shipping Museum in 1975, Bremerhaven set the first milestone in the targeted development of tourism. All of 25 years were to pass, however, until the seaside city continued its course towards becoming one of the most prominent maritime destinations in urban tourism.

Today, Bremerhaven with its numerous tourist attractions offers the possibility of taking city breaks lasting several days. Martime tourism is another core activity, and a new economic factor for Bremerhaven as a location. With the Havenwelten tourist quarter – which includes the Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost, the German Emigration Center, the Mediterraneo shopping mall, the German Shipping Museum, the Museum Harbour, the Sail City Hotel with observation platform at a height of 86 metres, and the ever-popular Zoo am Meer – Bremerhaven offers its guests a world of maritime knowledge and adventure. Events such as the international windjammer festival Sail and the maritime Festival Week, together with the arcade in the city centre, which was completely rebuilt in 2002, many new catering businesses and shopping opportunities, and the Schaufenster Fischereihafen (Fishing Port Showcase) in the south of the city, all attract thousands of visitors to Bremerhaven every year.
