Tradition and innovation in fish and food processing
Bremerhaven is Germany’s industry leader in fish and food processing, and serves as a shining example. About 88% of the fish sold on the German market originates from imports. Bremerhaven lies at the heart of these pan-European commodity flows and also has decades of know-how in handling this demanding foodstuff.
The Fischereihafen area forms the centre of the fish industry, which has a long tradition in the city and currently employs some 5 000 people. In the course of time, a cluster of fishery industries developed to encompass the entire value-adding chain of this sector: medium-sized enterprises and large companies that process fresh fish and seafood, packaging and warehousing firms as well as forwarders specializing in reefer transports.
With Frozen Fish International (Captain Iglo), Frosta AG (frozen food), Deutsche See (seafood products) and Nordsee (fish restaurants and retail chain), the leading companies of the food industry are all at home in Bremerhaven – and have been joined by many highly innovative fish-processing firms, trading and distribution enterprises, packaging companies, cooling-ice manufacturers, together with an entire network of institutions in the field of research and development, especially for product development, food analysis and quality assurance.
