| | FoodPort Bremerhaven – centre of the fish and food industry |
As a centre for today's food industry, the Fisheries Harbour epitomises the current transformation of Bremerhaven's economic structure. In the 1980s and 1990s, new and lucrative fields based on the traditional fish industry have been developed, for example in the production of frozen food and ready-made meals.
Big-name companies in the fish industry, namely Frozen Fish International (frozen fish), Frosta AG (frozen food), Deutsche See (fish manufacturing) and Nordsee (a chain of catering and retail outlets), are domiciled here.
The Fisheries Harbour is also a diversified industrial estate with a maritime focus, ranging from small craft trade enterprises to the large newbuilding shipyard. Around 200 companies are domiciled on the 450-hectare site, which is flanked by the two harbour basins totalling 150 hectares. More than 9,000 people have found full-time employment here – around 2,000 new jobs have been created since the mid-1990s.
Ten years ago, and with financial assistance from the European Union, the Fisheries Harbour received its own maritime 'theme park'. The central themes of the Schaufenster Fischereihafen 'shop window' are fish and the sea. In the former 'Fish Packing Hall IV', classy restaurants and cosy dockside pubs line up beside shops selling marine equipment and accessories. The Forum Fischbahnhof, so called because the core of the building is the old 'Fish (Railway) Station', is a one-stop source of information and entertainment: a 150,000-litre seawater aquarium, the seafish cookery studio, small shops, a café and the Theater im Fischereihafen. On the 'marketplace' between the Packing Hall and the Forum, a wide variety of events take place in the period from April to October.
